President Donald Trump’s Impact Upon Evangelicals

Volume 1, January 12, 2021

By Mark Ledbetter

Lauded as another Cyrus, the “anointed one”[1] who is to serve as the champion of Christian Rights, Conservative Causes, and the State of Israel, President Trump has impacted conservative Evangelicals but not in the way most imagined or hoped.

President Trump stood as the point-man for Evangelical concerns – the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness. He stood against Abortion and supported the State of Israel, recognizing Jerusalem as its Capital. He secured conservative justices who shaded the Supreme Court with conservative, Constitutional jurisprudence.

While President Trump accomplished much with his representation of conservative Evangelicals, the real impact of his presidency, however, is not with the favor many had hoped.

Trump’s presidency has done more to identify and isolate Evangelicals. With untiring, relentless support and advocacy on President Trump’s behalf, Conservative Evangelicals have become targets, enemies and subversives of a secular, humanistic state and its agenda. Resistance, oppression, and even persecution is coming - and is already.

To Whom do Conservative Evangelicals Now Turn?

With Trump's defeat, to whom will conservative Evangelicals turn to champion their cause, to defend their values, to provide them with a platform for their agenda? Will Trump run again in 2024? Is there another standing in the wings who will receive the mantle as “God’s anointed”?

O, Lord, may we turn our hearts to You, to Your Anointed One, the King of kings and Lord of lords, Your Son, Jesus Christ!

May God grant us a revival of holiness and prayer, a reformation that abandons partisan politics and secular pursuits, with a focus upon Proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the advancement of His Kingdom. God grant that the Bride of Christ will shake off the trappings of Christian Nationalism and prepare herself for the Return/Coming of her King, Jesus the Messiah.

O, Lord, may our hearts and minds remain strong against resistance, our spirits resolved to champion the cause and care of our Lord; may we remain consistent in our voice and always reflect the attitude and teaching of our Lord who teaches us to not resist the evil – the insults, the vilification of those who oppose us, abuse us, and persecute us, but to turn the other cheek, go the extra mile, and pray for and bless our persecutors.[2]

May we heed the admonition of the Apostle Paul who writes, "Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse...Never pay back evil to anyone...Never take your own revenge...Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. [3]

A Call to Respond!

Will we champion the cause of the oppressed, the impoverished, the disenfranchised, the disillusioned, discouraged? Are willing to be their advocates in the public forum? Are we prepared to offer them the hope and peace that Jesus offers to the wearied soul? Are we willing to share the Gospel, pray, labor and lobby for their redemption, salvation, reconciliation, and restoration?

Will Conservative Evangelicals stand as staunchly for Jesus Christ as they have for this President? Will Conservative Evangelicals spend as much time, energy, and money spent in the support of a political campaign, in the advancement of the Kingdom of God and become a strong voice for the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Are Conservative Christians prepared to live and die for the Cause of Heaven?

Are Conservative Evangelicals prepared to redeem their name regardless of the consequences? There may be a resurgence of the Christian voice, a revival effecting Community Awareness, but it will come with a price.

It is one thing to stand for Christ, but quite another to stand with Christ.

“I am a voice of one crying, ‘In the wilderness make straight the way of the Lord.’”

(Isaiah 40:3f; John 1:19-23)
